The artist is famous for his paintings of haystacks and lilies. But a new exhibition demonstrates his other side

He carried on producing caricatures for cash, studying masters of the form to develop his considerable skill. „If you put his caricatures next to those of Daumier or someone, you can see immediately where Monet is getting his ideas from.“ Monet saved the money he made from the caricatures to pay his way to Paris in 1860, where his first published work was a caricature. „He was very determined. He knew that he didn’t want to be a hack painter. But it took him a long time, 20 years, until he was making enough money just to get by.“
