Disney’s favourite artist was Germany’s Heinrich Kley, a Disney contemporary who created fantastical images of everything from cutesy anthropomorphic animals to scary demons.
But Disney’s tastes went far beyond the kitschy work of Kley. Disney also embraced the clever caricatures of 19th-century French artist Honoré Daumier and frightening images from the likes of the 16th-century German master Albrecht Durer.
